Kenshakou [Swordray/The Hole of Druaga] (Mr. DRILLER Drill Land [2002])

A top-favorite of mine that I consider nothing short of legendary. When Skeletonmanners (Discord, thank you by the way) reminded me of this track’s existence just a bit over a month before 2023 began, I knew I HAD to include it in the list!

The Violins are the main stars that can make just about anyone feel the desire to go out into a risky adventure, but we can’t forget the heroic Horns, acoustic Guitar, marching Drum rolls, and well-placed Piano rhythms! My favorite part has to be about 115 seconds into the track, it alone can stand as its own epic RPG title screen theme! Considering the in-universe park attraction’s Tower of Druaga theme-ing, there was no reason to even make a track this unique and long when they could’ve simply remastered source material music, but instead, we got this. May I call this high-level talent and dedication?

Ever played "Mr. Driller Drill Land?" Originally released on the Gamecube in Japan, it had gotten an "encore" release on modern consoles a few years ago. The last of the main Mr. Driller series, it divided its modes between five themed attractions. From personal experience, I found "The Hole of Druaga" to be the best one. It takes the Dristones of the previous game's scenario mode and infuses it into a themed dungeon-crawler, where you have to find and defeat Druaga by navigating the dungeon floors in search of the key and Druaga. The mode randomly generates the layout of rooms each time, so each playthrough is different.

In this image we have Vale and Hazy playing with the theme. Vale's armor is inspired by the original Gil, while Hazy is dressed like Druaga. Hopefully Vale ("Valegamesh?") has enough red and blue Dristones to combat Hazy; otherwise, he may have to dig quite a bit for some while avoiding her magic tricks.

Huge Happening at Horror Night House

Old-school Megami Tensei x Mr Driller thing, inspired when I realized both were published by Namco. Around Halloween, Drill Land's Horror Night House pulls out all the stops to make it extra spooky, even bringing in the huge spider demon Arachne to help with the atmosphere~ 🕸️

Keep your wits about you, Ataru! Remember your holy water! 🚰

--Island 7 through 10--

Ice island! the boss is a penguin type creature, and of course there's sliding involved. 'Don't treat me like an old man!' Sorry Taizo, in the Mr Driller universe, 45 is senior citizen.

--Island 8--

Although his initial motivation was to do all of this for the sake of not being in his son's shadow, I like to think he also doesn't want to worry him. (or rather, he wants to prove to him and himself that he can do this).

And this island has an end cutscene as well! Another encounter with the undergrounders.

they gave up making blocks and for what? Now the surface is in peril!

Also, the bottom frame for island 9, as there is not a cutscene there.

Its funny to me that Taizo doesn't seem to be a fan of old temple ruin exploration, given that he is stuck with Drindy Adventure in Drill Land, haha!

What's going on? It sure is - Arcade Edition

I took photos of my what the cat plush at local arcades where I lived before moving. Here are those:

The critter in my purse on the way to meow's first arcade visit. Love the way its little eyes are peeking out :3

I ended up replacing this purse a month or so after with a canvas purse. It tore a hole, and I decided it wasn't worth replacing with another crappy nylon one.

A visit to Groove Coaster (I think it was 4) before the servers shut off. Rest in peace, pal.

I'm not very good at this game, but I figured meow should visit a bullet hell for enrichment.

Ah yes, meow visits the land from which meow's friend Jonathan originated. (also this was my first time playing PIU, hence, why I can't handle a 4) (I mean I still can't now, but that's not the point SHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH)

Then came later trips, to the same arcade.

meow looks content, perhaps Exceed Gear reminds meow of a similarly-named weapon style in a certain NOISZ arcade port... who's to say?

Looks like Sumire and Hitori aren't the only phoenixes meow has gotten to meet, after this.

My last visit, which was to a different arcade than the previous ones. It's farther away, but generally has a better selection (important to me is maimai and Taiko no Tatsujin). Also, there's local server support for WACCA Reverse, which was great to use. The save data even carried over to where I moved, so that was good to find out (I didn't know how that worked at the time)

I got very lucky with Puyo Puyo Fever being brought back onto the arcade floor during my last visit before moving. The presence of this game is what caused me to discover the wonderful local arcade that housed it. I even wrote a paper for high school about the joyous experience of going to what felt like gamer heaven for the very first time. It's so fitting my last time here mirrored my first time, in that way.

What also got to see I believe Mr. Driller G, which was very cool. I'm bad at this game, but I had fun anyway. Getting to see this and play it was exciting in of itself. I really need to get Mr. Driller Drill Land for my Switch one of these days.

Vivid Wave was fun, although as a newbie with no e-amuse card, I generally didn't notice any significant difference between this and Exceed Gear. Still, was fun.

Funny thing is that I believe I knew from hearsay that MARENOL was in vivid/stasis as some sort of secret boss but hadn't unlocked it myself (based on my achievements timestamps).

That final visit is special to me, not only because of how much mental real estate this arcade has taken up for me over the years but also my first time playing an arcade rhythm game with other people. Two friends (or perhaps a couple? Idk) were playing maimai FiNALE and played with me, and I had fun even if it was awkward as hell ahaha.

It was a good note to leave my home state on and begin the next chapter of my life.

are there any mr driller fans who would be willing to help with making a new wiki (probably miraheze cause the katamari wiki is moving there im pretty sure) theres a f*ndom wiki but it sucks ass and it seems to get vandalized a lot from what other people say. and there are a bunch of characters that have names and info from drill land but no pages and i think that should be changed
